The Shots of Goodfellas Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Shots of Goodfellas - Essay Example Goodfellas doesn't celebrate the criminal way of life like The Godfather. The confining of the short following shot from a three-shot to the two-shot is fundamental for the mental perspective of the crowd that must be happy to acknowledge the maybe anecdotal statement that the man through whose eyes the story will be told was not as ruthless and brutal as people around him. The development away from legitimately remembering Henry for this show to uniting Tommy and Jimmy is a removing gadget that inconspicuously makes a feeling of crowd interest with Henryââ¬â¢s character. At no time in the altering of the extraordinarily rough opening succession of Goodfellas is Henry Hill at any point remembered for the polishing off the homicide of the man in the storage compartment. The crowd has no chance to get of knowing who this man is or what part he will play or why he was slaughtered. For the crowd canââ¬â¢t potentially realize he was a totally blameless observer to a wrongdoing as op posed to a wiseguy himself. Since this is the initial scene that basically acquaints the crowd with the fundamental characters it is basic that Henry isn't just never observed playing a functioning job in the homicide, yet apparently reacts to Jimmyââ¬â¢s gesture of the head to open the storage compartment in any case as Jimmy is his chief. The response shots of Henry reacting to the fierceness before him as opposed to partaking additionally serves to additionally increase crowd support to a limited extent on account of the lethal happiness with which Tommy executes and the fast scoff that shows up on Jimmyââ¬â¢s face before he shoots the body.

My Special Study Spots
My Special Study Spots Hey guys, Now I know there have probably been a few other posts that talk about places to go study around campus, but Im going to make mine kind of special. When you go to a college as big as Illinois, there are plenty of study spots, and it seems like when finals roll around theyre always filled up because everyone knows these are the best spots. These spots are obvious though; the Main Library/UGL, Grainger Engineering Library, the Illini Union, theyre all obvious choices. For you guys though, Ill let you in on my special study spots for future reference. And Ill even give it to you in forms of my top 3! 3. Armory Building I had a class here my freshman year, so Ive always known that there were plenty of classrooms open for student use, however there are plenty of students on campus that have never taken more than one visit to this lovely building, which makes it a prime study spot. Located right in the middle of Armory Avenue, this little gem kicks off my little list. Image found on (http://www.traviasuite.com/university-of-illinois-at-urbana-champaign-history.html) 2. The ACES Library Probably the least known of the major libraries on campus, this has been one of my more frequent locals recently due to the availability of its resources. Its not as big as some of the other libraries, but they have a nice computer lab, and several classrooms open to student usage. Located on Goodwin Avenue by Mumford Hall and the Fab Lab. Image found on (https://nicolehelregel.wordpress.com/2012/10/06/libraries-i-love-funk-aces-library/) 1. English Building Now as a Creative Writing major, I might be a little biased towards my majors hub, but it just seems like every time I need a quiet place, somewhere to print, or a desk, the English Building comes through in the clutch. There are several floors of open classrooms, just waiting to be used by students of all majors. They have a great computer lab too! Located right on the quad on the Wright Street side. Image found on (http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/North_America/United_States/Midwest/Illinois/Urbana/photo1201530.htm) That concludes my list. Hopefully everyone can get some good studying in. Good luck on your finals. Until next time, Kenny Kenny Class of 2016 Iâm in the Creative Writing program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Iâm originally from Tampa, Florida, but Iâve been calling Illinois my home since 1998. Iâve lived all over the Northwest suburbs, from Palatine to Lakemoor to where I currently live back home, Mundelein.

Should English Be The Law Essay Example
Should English Be The Law Essay The modern pace of progress of our civilization has culminated in a belief that we live in a global village. Some people attribute this state of things to the globalization of business. Others are convinced that mass media have a great deal to do with it. Some point their finger in the direction of the Internet. Still others shift the focus to the expansionist policy of the USA. All of these things must, of course, be taken into account when we speak about the global village, but the driving force behind it is the English language. This factor combines all things mentioned above into a coherent whole: English is the dominant language of science and technology, international organizations and mass media, business, the Internet and the most powerful nation ââ¬â the USA. It is everywhere. Some 380 million people speak it as their first language and perhaps two-thirds as many again as their second. A billion are learning it, about a third of the worlds population are in some sense exposed to it and by 2050, it is predicted, half the world will be more or less proficient in it. It is the language of globalizationââ¬âof international business, politics and diplomacy. It is the language of computers and the Internet. Youll see it on posters in Cote dlvoire, youll hear it in pop songs in Tokyo, youll read it in official documents in Phnom Penh. Deutsche Welle broadcasts in it. Bjork, an Icelander, sings in it. French business schools teach in it. It is the medium of expression in cabinet meetings in Bolivia. King is captivating, not to be denied. The very complicated problem of language Mr. Robert D. King elucidates from the very democratic and human point of view. One can not but agree with the expressed ideas. Mr. King describes the ââ¬Å"linguisticâ⬠situation in many countries ââ¬â Great Britain, The United States, India, Irland and others. I would like to supplement the picture by one of the recent examples. Take, Ukraine, this long-suffering country and its nationalists led by their president Yushtshenko who have raped the country and impose their values on it. They want to justify the war criminals from the so-called Ukrainian Rebel Insurgent Army, they want to tear up the people from Russia, their traditional friend, brother and protector. These nationalists pathologically hate the Russian language, great and powerful, as Iwan Turgenev puts it, notwithstanding the fact, that the greater part of the country speaks Russian, practically all its southeastern part, economically most developed in addition. The nationalists proclaim the Ukrainian the countryââ¬â¢s only official language. At almost all schools and institutes the pedagogical process is conducted in Ukrainian, nobody is interested in the desire of parents and students. In my opinion such forced Ukrainizationà à can not be successful, in this respect m y opinion fully coincides with that of Mr. King as I understand it. Mr. King says that in the United States English should be the law, but the process of spreading the language must be voluntary and natural, without any compulsion. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language, for we intend to see that the crucible turns our people out as Americans, of American nationality and not as dwellers of a polyglot boarding housesâ⬠(Theodore Roosevelt). There are many countries where the problem of language is solved democratically as it must be in civilized countries: The United States, Great Britain, Ireland, Switzerland, India. In Canada, Ceylon and in the Ukraine this rather complicated problem is solved undemocratically. I am opposed to the idea of independent Quebec. Ukrainianà nationalists want and even dream to become a member of the European Union, but the policy of suppression of the Russian is barbaric way of solving this problem, it violates all European norms. ââ¬Å"Language is an explosive issue in the countries of the former Soviet Unionâ⬠(Estonia, Moldova, the Ukraine). In the United States of America there is no linguistic problem: ââ¬Å"Who needs a law when, according to the 1990 census, 94% of American residents speak English any way?â⬠Not many ofà todayââ¬â¢s immigrants will see their first language survive into the second generation. Spanish is hardly a threat to Englishâ⬠¦ The everyday language of South Texas is Spanish, and yet South Texas is not about to cede from Americaâ⬠This ââ¬Å"language does not threaten American unityâ⬠. ââ¬Å"History teaches a plain lesson about language. There is almost nothing the government of a free country can do to change language usage and practice significantly, to force its citizens to use certain languages in preference to others, and to discourage people from speaking a language they wish to continue to speak.â⬠The world of languages gives a glaring demonstration of inequality. Some languages give better opportunities to success and enrichment than others. Every language has a certain investment appeal: some languages are more attractive and some less. According to some estimates 90 % of the current some 6.000 languages will have died out by the end of the century. In terms of culture it would be a tremendous loss. However one must be a realist and face up to the inevitable. We may like or dislike English, but we must recognize the fact that English has already ensured a future for itself. How right was Kipling when he wrote: ââ¬Å"But first you must master their language Their dialects, proverbs and songs. Donââ¬â¢t trust any clerk to interpret When they come with the tale of their wrongsâ⬠. Politicians may be forcing people to speak the language with a poor investment potential, they may even declare the language to be the only state language, but what they prove by it is their poor educational backgrounds and deplorable reading habits. Life does not obey political slogans. It has its own laws. We have to adjust ourselves to the realities of life in this village. The only laissez-passer to this village is English. English is certainly bound to survive and flourish. References Crystal, David.(1999). The future of Englishes. English Today,15, 10 ââ¬â 20.
